| Info for Students New to Serenity Yoga Studio |
A Note from Toni: Thanks so much
for your interest in Serenity Yoga Studio. We have a small studio - 11
students max in a class. I hope you will find the atmosphere welcoming
and relaxing, and the class just what you're looking for. I do encourage
honest feedback, so I try to check in with new students within a few days
of your class to see what you thought of the class - but feel free to
email me with your comments. If it is not what you are looking for, tell
me what's missing, and I'll suggest other classes at Serenity or other
studios to try.
The information below was compiled to address most questions people new to
our studio have. If your questions are not addressed here, please do
contact me with any questions you have - nothing is too minor. In the
last section below, I've asked for information from you that would be
helpful for us to have before you come for your first class. Whether you
are looking for a place to practice on a regular basis, dropping in just
to try us out, or visiting the area, I do hope you'll enjoy our studio and
our classes.
Kind regards,
Toni INFO ON OUR
CLASSES
Our classes are 90 minutes unless noted otherwise on the class schedule
(click the Yoga Class Schedule button above right).
Generally, classes start with a quiet centering to guide you to
transition from the busyness of your day to being present and ready for
your practice. Centering and warm-ups are usually done sitting and/or
lying done on mats. Warm-ups are based on Yoga postures and are intended
to gently stretch muscles and prepare your spine for Yoga postures. Yoga
postures are guided for various positions: standing, kneeling, sitting,
supine (lying on your back), prone (lying face down). Any posture can be
modified to suit your specific needs, and nothing should cause pain or
discomfort - so if you find yourself in a posture that is painful, keep
breathing and slowly come out of the posture - the instructor will offer
modifications for you or will guide you in an alternative posture. Each
class ends with a period of relaxation, generally about 10 minutes where
you are lying on your back, you can have a cushion under the backs of your
knees to relieve strain on the lower back, there are neck pillows and eye
pillows if you choose to use them (NOTE: make sure you place a
folded tissue over your eyes before using an eye pillow), and there are
blankets to cover you as you cool down.
If you are enrolled, about 2 weeks before the end of each session,
you'll receive a registration email with an invoice attached for the next
session. Just reply to that email to let me know your plans for
continuing with your class or changing to a different class.
PREPARING FOR
YOUR CLASS
Dress comfortably - in layers if you tend to get too warm to cold. The
rooms are heated and air conditioned and temps should be like a home
environment (we do not have 'hot Yoga'). Standing postures are best done
in bare feet, and you can put socks back on for other postures if your
feet are cold. Try not to eat 2-3 hours before class unless it's
something light and easily digestible. We do have water available, but
you can bring your own if you like.
PLEASE ARRIVE A
FEW MINUTES EARLY.
If it's your first class with us, there is paperwork to fill out,
so plan to be there 10-15 minutes before the start of class. And each
week, plan to arrive a few minutes early to settle in so that the class
can start on a quiet note with everyone settled in on their mats. We do
have people just show up either for a make-up or drop-in. If you are
late, your spot may be taken by someone who showed up to see if space was
available.
PROPS
We do have mats, blankets, cushions, and all the props you'll need for
your practice. But I do encourage people to bring their own mats and
blankets. Our props are available for use by the student population. We
cannot clean mats and blankets after each class, but they are cleaned
periodically. There is cleaning spray (non-toxic, unscented) for students
to use to lightly spray a sticky mat, and paper towels are there to wipe
it down.
IF YOU ARE SICK
....
If you are sick, especially if you have a fever, are coughing and
sneezing, please consider that you might be contagious and do not come to
class if you think you might be. We do have a make-up policy (summarized
below). And we have Purel available to everyone to use before and/or
after class. Remember, our props are available to the student
population, so please use common sense if you are going to use them.
COST AND PAYMENT
Cost is $18 for a drop-in, and you can continue as a drop-in to any
class for as long as you want and space is available. If you enroll, you
get a different rate - $15/class - and you prepay for the full session.
If you want to try several classes pr take the same class a couple of
times before you make the commitment, just pay the drop-in rate each time
you come. Then when you decide to enroll, the lower rate is retroactive
to your first class, and you'll just pay the balance to finish the
session. Once enrolled, that spot is yours for as long as you want it -
we renew every 2 months. We accept enrollment from new students at
the $15/class rate up to the mid-point of a session. New students
enrolling after that will pay the drop-in rate, but their spot is still
reserved, and their rate drops to the enrollment rate in the next session.
Payment is cash or check - we do not accept credit cards.
MAKE-UPS
Enrolled students can make-up missed classes - just contact Toni by phone
or email and she'll arrange for your make-up either holding an available
spot in another class or waitlisting you for a cancellation. You can also
just show up to any class and check with the instructor to see if space is
available - if the class is expected to be full, you may be asked to wait
until everyone who is expected has a chance to arrive, and if there is an
available spot, you can take the class.
You can make up a class anytime during
the 2-month session, even before the date of the missed class. We
do ask - if at all possible - that you let us know with as much advance
notice as possible if you are going to miss your regular class. That way
we know that a spot is available to accommodate another student's make-up
or drop-in request. We do understand that is it not always possible to
give any notice when missing a class.
Make-ups do not carry forward and are not guaranteed, but we do put
in a lot of effort to arrange for make-ups for all those who want them.
PARKING & ENTERING
THE BUILDING
Park anywhere in the big lot that we share with Bedford Farms Ice Cream
and Dalya's Restaurant. Come in the front door - leave your coat and
shoes in the front hall, but do take any valuables into the studio with
you - it's a public hallway that is shared with unrelated businesses on
the second floor. There are two very small bathrooms tucked under the
stairs in that hallway, and a larger one that may be better for changing
clothes through our office area to the door at the far right,
through the reception room - the larger bathroom is off the reception
room. We keep that area quiet because the massage room is off our office
and reception room.
DIRECTIONS
Just click on the link 'Directions' above and left. If you need
additional info for directions, just contact us and let us know
where you are coming from.
INFO WE WOULD LIKE
TO GET FROM YOU BEFORE YOUR FIRST CLASS
Please let us know if you have any health
issues, injuries, chronic pain, etc, that affects your ability to move
freely and without pain; also if you've had surgery in the past 6 months;
and if you are pregnant.
It would be helpful if you could send us
your day/evening/cell phone numbers.
We only use them in case of an unforeseen need to cancel a class due to a
teacher's illness (very rare) or, in winter, because of weather (we do
have a procedure in place where students call in and listen to the
recording on ext 1 to find out if class has been canceled for weather).
